China has quietly built a decisive lead in next‑generation connectivity, operating the largest and most extensive 5G network on the planet. By October 2025, the country had deployed about 4.76 million 5G base stations, creating a dense, nationwide web of high‑speed mobile infrastructure. This rollout is a central pillar of China’s broader strategy to modernize its digital ecosystem and support everything from smart cities to industrial automation.

The scale on the user side is just as striking. More than 1.18 billion mobile customers are now using 5G services through the country’s three major telecom operators, together with China Broadnet. That means the vast majority of Chinese mobile users already have access to ultrafast connections, low latency and greater network capacity. For everyday life, this translates into smoother video streaming, more reliable remote work and richer mobile services.

Economically, the telecommunications sector has maintained steady growth on the back of this 5G boom. The network serves as critical infrastructure for emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, telemedicine and advanced manufacturing. By pushing 5G coverage into both megacities and smaller urban areas, China is laying the groundwork for a highly connected economy where data flows seamlessly between people, businesses and machines.

Strategically, leading the world in 5G deployment also strengthens China’s position in global tech competition. The country is not only building networks at home, but also exporting equipment, standards and know‑how through international projects. In that sense, its 5G expansion is more than a domestic achievement: it is a statement of technological power and a foundation for the next wave of digital innovation.
