The Málaga-based tech company Freepik has finalized the acquisition of The Chronicles of Bone, an original fantasy series created with artificial intelligence by American filmmaker Kavan Cardoza. Described as a “pioneering” deal by Freepik, the agreement presents a new hybrid production model that allows the creator to retain 100% of the intellectual property rights and maintain full creative control throughout the project.
Although Freepik—known for its graphic resources and AI tools—has previously collaborated in Hollywood productions, this marks its first venture into original audiovisual content, signaling a strategic step into creative production under an innovative rights model.
Commitment to the Creator’s Vision
The Chronicles of Bone emerges from a unique partnership between Freepik and Cardoza, who is also co-founder of the AI studio Phantom X. Under the terms of the collaboration, Cardoza oversees every aspect of the creative process—from writing and character design to final production. The filmmaker praised Freepik’s “genuine commitment to the creator’s vision,” emphasizing that the company “not only provides tools but also grants the freedom to create without constraints or interference,” as reported by El Español.
A Model to Protect Artistic Ownership
In an era when artificial intelligence is transforming the creative industries, Cardoza highlights the importance of “preserving the author’s voice.” The partnership with Freepik is built on this principle, ensuring that the director retains full copyright and intellectual ownership of his work. The production approach blends physical craftsmanship with digital enhancement powered by Freepik’s AI platform, as detailed by Reason Why.
Cardoza’s process begins with the tangible design and creation of costumes, which serve as visual references before being developed digitally. This method anchors the creative identity of each character in a physical record that later evolves within the digital domain. According to Cadena SER, this workflow “establishes a significant difference” within a technology industry often dominated by intellectual property disputes.
A Five-Season Fantasy Universe
The series unfolds across five seasons and more than 40 main characters and will be released on Cardoza’s official YouTube channel, notes IP Mark. The creator is currently publishing a prologue season focusing on the central figures of the story.
The Chronicles of Bone is a dark fantasy reinterpretation of well-known mythological and literary icons such as Robin Hood, King Arthur, and Frankenstein—now coexisting in a shared universe threatened by an army of vampires. Each episode runs between 10 and 15 minutes, requiring around three to four weeks of production time.
From Málaga to Hollywood Recognition
Freepik’s involvement in Cardoza’s series builds on its growing relationship with the film industry. The Spanish company, founded in 2010, has already contributed visual tools and AI technology to Tom Hanks’ film Here and Amazon Prime Video’s series House of David.
Recently, its technologies were also used in The Great Reset, the first feature-length film produced entirely with artificial intelligence to receive official recognition from the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—making it eligible for the Oscars.
According to Sofía López, AI Growth & Marketing Lead at Freepik, this milestone “marks a turning point for Hollywood” and opens the door for other AI-centered creative projects to gain recognition at major international film festivals.
As the boundaries between human creativity and machine intelligence continue to blur, Freepik’s partnership with Kavan Cardoza positions the company at the forefront of a new era of ethical, creator-led AI storytelling.
